Don't worry...you'll get the hang of navigating the site it no time. It's such a large active group. The only thing we like better than painting rocks is viewing rocks....so thanks for jumping in a sharing your creations with us. You have some real creative ideas....your little fairy and the cat looking out the window are clever.
Regarding your question about getting a more realistic look....I think shading and highlights do help as well as trying to steer away from using black outlines. (something I'm working on myself 
) I highly recommend checking Suzi's website www.suzichua.com she has some free tutorials and she sells a wonderful ebook with easy, step by step instructions that will have you painting like a pro in no time. It has been invaluable to me in achieving more realism in my paintings.
