[Rock Painting] Re: Rock Houses

 repost with working links:

Hi and welcome,

Don't know for sure why there aren't more rock houses. I find that animals and pets are good sellers so i tend to paint a lot of these. Something with a face has instant appeal and probably makes these items more popular. The rock shapes are easy to find too...round.  I spotted your little house in Newest A. It's very cute and very detailed from what I can see.   Pricing can be a challenging. I would guess similar to any rock painting as you have to factor in your time and materials.   Also what venue...craft shows, region,  ebay, online website etc.  I found this book helpful : Homemade for profit:    http://barbarabrabec.com/handmade_for_profit.htm
There are quite a few book out there about pricing your crafts...maybe check your local library.

As opposed to wood filler I use this stuff called EPOXY PUTTY

They
sell this stuff at hardware stores. Those in the states can find it in the paint department of Home depot. It comes in 4" tubes for about $3.00 USD. You just cut it and mix it between your fingers until the 2 colors blend and it applies really easy. You can get different kinds for various surfaces with super fast drying times....that can get hard in a matter of minutes and then it can be sanded if needed. I'll add: as a tip ..keep your fingers moist with water when kneading it and it does have a strange/chemical-like odor but it doesn't smell once it's dry. Here's a link to the product selling on the home shopping network. Theirs is called sticky putty...same stuff. If you click on the "VIDEO" link you can see them demonstrating it> http://home-solutions.hsn.com/sticky-putty-3-pack_p-2099662_xp.aspx?web_id=2099662&ocm=sekw
Great
stuff to have around the house...you will find uses for it all the time. I've also heard about this sculpting material called Model magic by crayola. I haven't tried it but it looks like it could work well for our rock purposes.

Regarding sealers, We all use different types of sealers. You mainly want to look for
something that is non-yellowing and marked specifically for
exterior
use
. Though it has been my experience that you don't want the items
placed in direct sunlight or overly moist areas.  I also recommend resealing
every yr or two. The sun is just so harsh on all painted surfaces.

Here are some products many of us use and can be found in your local walmart,
craft store or hardware store:
krylon crystal clear: http://www.dickblick.com/zz217/10/
(they make one that is triple thick)

Delta ceramcoat clear exterior varnish:

Spar brush on varnish (Spar is often used on boats...look for it in Home depot)

Duraclear deco art exterior sealer (brush on)

hope it helps and Good luck in your endeavors..
