WELCOME VIOLET!!! What brand varnish did you use?  We all use different types of sealers. Mainly I suggest something that is non-yellowing and marked specifically for exterior use.   The elements are so harsh on painted surfaces of any kind.  Even car paint fades and is effected....so it has been my experience that painted rocks are too over time.   The best thing is to minimize exposure to overly moist areas and direct sunlight no matter what sealer is used....and reseal every yr for lasting durability.   Here are some products many of us use and can be found in craft stores or hardware stores: Spar brush on varnish (Spar is often used on boats...look for it in Home depot or similar hardware or boat dealer in your area)  I recommend experimenting with this varshes and see how it works for you. Spar Varnish Spar varnish(also called marine varnish is high quality, waterproof, and sunlight-resistant varnish named for its use on ship or boat spars and other woodwork where a glossy finish is desired. Alkyd-modified tung oil and phenolic resins are often used. Better grades of spar varnish. have substantially higher amounts of uv-absorbers added.
