I believe you would need to seal your rock good with some brush on or
spray sealer. I think polyurethane is good, I've used the sealer that
is sold with the paints I buy. Of course you may have to put several
coats on drying well between coats. Protect your rock as much as
possible from the weather bringing it indoors during the winter. You
can also give it a yearly protective sealing.
