I'm not that great at portraits myself .....but I'll add a few suggestions that I noticed. I think on his mouth you did a good job with the changes. His smile is a little bigger in the reference photo but I still think your interpretation is accurate and looks like him. I would make his eyes more like in the reference pic...where the top of his iris is slightly covered by his eye lid. (See the pics I added to the progress folder) I put the photo side by side in my photo editing sofware and then made small changes with the drawing freature in the program to illustrate these suggestions. I made the area between his brow more prononunced and his ear lobe a little lower. see what you think .
For the girl ...left off your computer screen....i think her mouth is a little too low ...in your painting she looks older....as her face looks slightly elongated. In the reference pic she still has that more rounded ...child-like face. I would move her mouth a tad higher ..closer to her nose.
