Eight Week Poetry Studio/Workshop

Saturdays from 10:00am-12:00pm
Course is $125, which covers rental fee for the space, as well as photocopying and refreshments for classes.
Students should expect to complete weekly written and/or reading assignments for this class, in which we will contemplate both free verse and a handful of received forms. My plan is to split the output from the students between both creative and critical writing, utilizing in- and out-of-class assignments as well as brief weekly readings.
Loosely, we will address techniques for "writing around the subject," to expose our tendencies (good or bad, intended or no, effective or not) of avoidance when taking on difficult subject matter. This will include exercises in apophatic construction (creation of negative space), euphemism and metaphor, and/or other formal/technical tools available to the exposed/exposing poet.
A recurring motif for this class will be the figure of the "objective witness," and the ways in which objectivity can sometimes fail to represent or encapsulate a holistic rendering of the truth of a witnessed event.
Intended for poets writing at a college level. Prospective students should submit up to four pieces (10 page maximum) to the email address above. Those who do not have a portfolio of poetry should write a brief statement of interest, explaining how/why the class will be of use.
