(Somerville, MA) The Nave Gallery presents, "The Secret Knowledge of
Water, " a group exhibition curated by Karl Gustafson featuring the
work of local and regional artists.  The exhibit runs from
July 18 – August 17, 2008,  with an opening reception on Friday,
July 18 from 6 - 8 p.m.  The work chosen illustrates efforts
of the participating artists to reveal the secret knowledge of water using
wildly different media, including printmaking, photography, oil,
interactive media and video. Water is painted, photographed, printed and
mapped as its mysteries are explored but never fully solved. Like trying
to catch water in your hands, this exhibit entices the viewer to
experience the pleasure and challenge of water's many secrets.

Participating artists:

Emile Tobenfeld
Angela Devenney
Stan Czesniuk
Dan Osterman
Liz Johnson
Heather Classen
Christine Destrempes
Ellie Brenner
Moira Barrett
Greg O'Brien
Gary Duehr
Kathleen Rugh
Jane Sherrill
Matt Carrano
Cathy Schaefer
Shelley Loheed
Denyse Murphy
Ruth Hamill
Laura Torres

Highlights include:

Angela Devenney gathers rainwater in the west coast of Ireland to use as
photograms that magnify the beauty and force of rain to bring constant
change to what and how we see.

Ellie Brenner is fascinated by the role of water in the processes of
disintegration and experiments with the effects of water and rust on
paper.

Gary Duehr sees water as cinema.  "Water, in the movies, often indicates
and encloses a solitude.  That is its secret."  By using images taken from
movies he captures the liminal moments of our lives that water can make so
exquisitely poignant.

Laura Torres seeks to highlight issues of technology and resistance in
contemporary Ecuador by creating a large kinetic map of the Paute River.

Greg O'Brien focuses on the abstracting effects of water reflections on
Lake Winnipesaukee and creates beautiful images that are "fun to ponder",
in the words of his thirteen year old son Cole.

Emile Tobenfeld is a video artist who offers a visual exploration of the
many textures of water, real and imagined.

Following the reception at 8pm, Emile Tobenfeld and friends "Water Music and other Improvisations" $5 suggested dontation
Video artist Emile Tobenfeld (a.k.a. Dr. T) performs video improvisations using multiple DVD players,, utilizing his videography, photography and animation.  Joining Dr. T for this performance is an ensemble of musicians featuring Eric Crawley on synth and harpeggi (cross between a guitar and a dulcimer). The free-flowing music and visual improvisations will explore the theme of "The Secret Knowledge of Water."
