Rakiya returns this Saturday night after a couple month hiatus to
reinstate the monthly Balkan Music and Dance Party tradition
at (air-conditioned) Third Life Studio!
Whether you like to dance or not, or whether you even know the first
thing about Balkan music, come listen to a great band playing in
uneven rhythms and maybe even try a dance or three! Rakiya is a
fantastic group of talented, fiery instrumentalists with a wonderful lead
singer-- all of whom have immersed themselves in the music of the
Balkans (and Rom people) for years. It promises to be another
really fun, informal, high energy night at the Studio, so I really hope to see
you there! Details below....(as well as a list of upcoming events at the Studio!)

SATURDAY, 7/26/08 8-11pm: RAKIYA! A Concert and Dance Party!
A fiery Boston-based 8-piece Balkan Rom (Gypsy) Band
Passionate, high energy songs and dance music from the Rom people
of Eastern Europe, with great complex rhythms and melodies! Rakiya
is named for the fiery fruit brandy which is popular in the Balkans, and
mentioned in many songs of the region. Though it is sold in stores,
the best rakiya is home-made, and this particular batch was brewed
secretly in a cold, dark basement somewhere in Brighton. MA.
Rakiya performs electric, very danceable Balkan Rom (Gypsy) songs
and dance tunes.
