[somartscouncil] East Somervile Neighbors for Change (ESNC) MEPA deadline 8/8/08

Dear East Somerville Residents, Friends & Neighbors,

ESNC has been working hard to showcase 2 major environmental concerns, among many, regarding the new Assembly Square Development in East Somerville. On August 8th the deadline for written comments  to The Massachusetts Environmental Protection Agency (MEPA) will end.

Here is your chance to show your support for ESNC and have your comments be noted. Below is the e-mail and written address to Executive Office of Environmental Affairs (EOEA). This office has the power to influence the developer's plans and priorities relating to the environment.

ESNC's 2 biggest Environmental concerns are:

·   Local Jobs with a hiring agreement. We want first shot at eligible jobs, application assistance for those that need it, and jobs that people can walk or bus/bike to. We accomplished that from IKEA, now let's pressure the developer. Local jobs are good for our economy and good for our environment.

·   Non-automotive Access (pedestrian/wheelchair/bicycle) improvements. We want residents and workers to be able to access Assembly Square safely. Pedestrian Improvements along McGrath Highway, Stop N Shop and Lower Broadway are imperative to not block off East Somerville any further than it already is from the rest of the city. We have the highest amount of highways & traffic in East Somerville, and the least safest pedestrian access from existing neighborhoods to the Assembly Square area. This is also the perfect opportunity to encourage the extension of the bike path, through Somerville, right into Boston. We also want direct Community Input in the development of our waterfront.

A community review group to critique traffic, pedestrian access and local hiring is strongly encouraged as the project grows and at final completion.

These concerns are not new. Maybe you've given them some thought already. Here's your chance to make them official:
  • Please use the right written address for the Secretary in the text.
  • It's  also very important to include the project number in written or e-mailed letters
