[somartscouncil] Willoughby and Baltic Develops Hacker/Maker Spaces-Meeting Wednesday

Willoughby and Baltic, founded in 2001, became home to DorkbotBoston in January 2005. Since then, the former gallery has been bursting at the seams while juggling robotics classes, hacker meetings, and exhibition planning. In October 2008, Willoughby and Baltic will acquire two additional locations to support the growing hacker and maker communities in Boston. This volunteer-run initiative is a result of our growing community, and will serve as a center in the Somerville/Cambridge area for like-minded tinkerers, makers and builders.

Changes
197A Elm Street-above the Subway Sandwich Shop-will become a 700 square foot hacker lounge, complete with soldering workstations and a computer lab stocked with graphics and multimedia software, high resolution slide scanner, 12x19'' poster printer, as well as programming IDE's. Oscilloscopes, electronic components, and multimeters will be available, as well as refreshments for late-night hacking sessions.

195g Elm Street, the current home of Willoughby and Baltic, will contain small tools and serve as a workshop space for those making small objects. We will have scroll saws, a drill press, a sander, lathes, hand tools, and other equipment to use in making desktop sized objects. Some classes will also be held at this location.

Our new workshop in Union Square will serve as our industrial fabrication space. This space is packed with industrial sized tools for both woodworking and metalworking. This space is especially intended for large projects, or projects that require more advanced tools. Classes will be given in the use of these tools. Welding workstations are available here, as well as metal and wood cutting and drilling tools.

DorkbotBoston meetings will be held on the first Tuesday of every month at the Charles River Museum of Industry in Waltham, MA. DorkbotBoston meetings will continue to be held on the third Tuesday of every month at Willoughby and Baltic in Davis Square.

An open information session about the new hacker/maker space will be held on Wednesday, August 27th at 7:00pm at Willoughby & Baltic, 195g Elm Street, Davis Square.
