Commonwealth Corps Program
Teen Empowerment is seeking 3 volunteers interested in joining the state's
new Commonwealth Corps, a year-long volunteer program sponsored by the
state of MA (similar to Americorp/VISTA). TE's corp members will serve as
resident artists and will work directly with TE youth organizers (ages
14-21), with guidance from TE adult staff, to create original performance
pieces, videos, and visual artwork to help further their organizing goals.
The three positions include:
1. A visual arts/graphic design specialist who will work with youth to
create back drops and sets for theatrical performances, design fliers and
posters to advertise events, create public artwork (painting, photography,
murals, etc.) and work on web-based art and design projects.
2. A music specialist who will assist youth with creation of original
songs and rap beats for performance at events, help youth score
accompaniment for theatrical performances and spoken word poetry, help
digitally record original pieces, etc.
3. A video/film specialist who will work with youth to film and edit
their performances and distribute them via the internet (YouTube, etc.) and
other means, create original documentary and short films to be shown at
events, and video tape and edit interviews with youth, adult residents,
police, business owners, and other stakeholders on community issues youth
are working to address.
Corps members will serve an average of 3-4 afternoons per week and an
additional 5-8 hours per week on average (total of 20 hrs/wk average) from
October through June. They will also attend youth events and statewide
events for Commonwealth Corp members.
Commonwealth Corp members will receive a $5,000 stipend for the year plus a
$1,000 bonus upon completion of their service. In addition, Corp members
will receive training and experience in youth development, meet other Corp
members from across the state, and get a chance to make a difference in
needy communities and the lives of urban youth!
Teen Empowerment will perform CORI/SORI checks on Corps members.
Volunteers must have some level of expertise in one or more of the arts
areas outlined above and be available during weekday afternoons.
