I am in the same boat, horse wise.  My filly Dove is 2 now and I just started putting my lightweight dressage saddle on her.  She is doing great with the side reins and longeing.

I am going to upgrade to my western saddle pretty soon.  I have leaned acrossed the saddle with it on her and she is good with that.  I hope to be up on her by the end of summer.

I will post a shot of her with the saddle on soon.
