Re: [Rock Painting] Re: paint cracking up

Vicky, I have painted coated stones before from Michaels and I dont think they were real rocks  that crackled. I thought it was the varnish on them. I havent had the canvas problem tho.

Well I called Plaid Folk Art, to talk about paint. They definitely do
not recommend mixing brands, but that is probably not what caused my
problem. The Plaid expert asked me about my surfaces I'm painting on
and I described the cheap, pre-primed canvas boards. When I mentioned
that they smelled terrible, she began to suspect there was something
about them, that is not compatible with using a water-based acrylic
paint over them. Seeing a crackling happen to the paint is something
that can result from surface and paint not being compatible. It is
really the only answer that makes sense to me, I must have gotten a
couple of boards that were not produced properly.
So I'll be saving my pennies and get a more-known brand of boards next
time, that are acrylic-primed to be ready for acrylic
painting.Meanwhile I have a renewed appreciation of painting on ROCKS!

As for mixing brands of paint (ceramcoat and folk art and patio
paint), I may keep on
doing it, not sure yet!! LOL
