Ditto to Sherrill's remarks about your rooster........gr8 job!

Mary made a good point.  If you do have some extra of those cheap boards and you can't take them back...maybe experiment with them and spray half with krylon sealer to create a barrier and slap some paint strokes over both halves and see if you can detect any cracking.
