1) Sunday, 7/20, 7:30pm: KALLET, EPSTEIN & CICONE

 

Cindy Kallet, Ellen Epstein, and Michael Cicone have had the pleasure

of performing together in  concerts, coffeehouses, and festivals around the

country since 1981. Their close harmonies have inspired enthusiastic

responses from audiences and critics alike. The trio sings both a cappella

and accompanied by guitar and hammered dulcimer, drawing material from

contemporary and traditional music of the British Isles and North America,

with a liberal sprinkling of sea music and occasional forays into other

cultures as well. This concert celebrates the release of their third CD,

Heart Walk.

2) Friday, 7/25, 8pm: STORMIN' NORMAN & SUZY

 

Stormin' Norman Zamcheck and Suzy Williams reunited in 2005,

originally gaining fame with their unique rag'n'roll music in the 70's. 

They played Carnegie Hall and performed with Moses Pendleton's

Pilobolus dance troupe. Bette Midler, Odetta, Roosevelt Sykes,

Eubie Blake and Nicolas Ray have all praised their passionate

music and vibrant energy.

    Middle Eastern Percussion Workshop with Eric Peterson

Please bring your own drum to class, some drums will be
provided. Djembes and Ashikos are welcome.
 
Come discover the fun of learning to play Middle Eastern and
North African percussion instruments. This is a 2 hour workshop
for students at all levels from beginner to intermediate, covering
the techniques and rhythms for playing in a percussion ensemble.
The workshop will focus on primary rhythms of Arabic, Turkish,
Armenian and Greek music. Instrument instruction will include:
Egyptian Tabla (doumbek) Riq (Arabic tambourine) Def and
Bendir (frame-drums) and Zils. We will learn the fundamentals
of cultural rhythms, as well as learning techniques for variations
and drum soloing.

This workshop is great for both dancers and musicians, as focus
will also include rhythms for Zils, and techniques for drummers and
dancers working together.
 
Eric has studied Middle Eastern percussion with renowned musicians
such as Hossam Ramzy, Souhail Kaspar, and Layne Redmond. He
has provided Middle Eastern rhythms and percussion for numerous
Arabic, Turkish, and Greek ensembles, as well as lending his skills
to Rock, Bluegrass, Electronic/House, and even Rap music. His love
of many genres of music has lead him towards constant experimentation
with many different kinds of musicians from many different backgrounds
and styles.
 

4) Saturday, 7/26, 8pm: CONCERT & DANCE PARTY with RAKIYA

    $10 at the door.

 

Passionate, high energy songs and dance music from the Rom people of Eastern

Europe, with great complex rhythms and melodies! Rakiya is named for the fiery

fruit brandy which is popular in the Balkans, and mentioned in many songs of the region.

Though it is sold in stores, the best rakiya is home-made, and this particular batch

was brewed secretly in a cold, dark basement somewhere in Brighton. MA.

Rakiya performs electric, very danceable Balkan Rom (Gypsy) songs and dance tunes.

Low Profile is a Boston based jazz ensemble performing original

music written by members of the group. The band freely negotiates

between many genres of improvised music, from funk based grooves

to fast swing, Latin rock to the Avant-garde and everything in between.

The group vision comes from all of the members who perform to the

ideal that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.

    MIXED LEVEL, MULTI-GENERATIONAL AFRICAN DANCE
    with ALICE HELLAR
    Mixed Level African Dance Workshop with special drum instruction
    at the end! Class will include a full body warm up and an introduction to
    movement to drumming. You will learn dances and rhythms, enjoy
    a traditional community dance circle and special percussion instruction
    at the end (class will be tailored to participants). Bring your own drum
    or if you are interested in drumming and don't have one, let us know
    in advance so we can plan accordingly!
